Volleys were fired and taps played as the Kankakee area remembered those who have served the country in the armed forces on this Veterans Day. The Kankakee County Veterans Council hosted today’s gathering inside the Kankakee County Historical Museum at Governor Small Memorial Park. Michael Pitts, a Decorated Marine, Vietnam Vet and Commander of American Legion Post 85 was keynote speaker and told the crowd of about 50 that it’s important that we not forget those veterans who never came home. Veterans Day began as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War One when the shooting stopped in the 11th month, on the 11th day at the 11th hour.
