Prosecutors Fight ‘Battered Woman Defense’ in Xandria Harris Murder Case

Feb 13, 2026 | 1:51 PM

A status hearing was held in Kankakee County Circuit Court this morning in the case of Xandria Harris, who is accused in the killing of Bradley Police Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic and the wounding of Officer Tyler Bailey in December 2021, along with her then-boyfriend, Darius Sullivan.

Kankakee County State’s Attorney Jim Rowe argued that the “Battered Woman Defense” Harris’ attorney would like to use is not relevant to the first-degree murder charges because Sergeant Rittmanic never battered Harris.

A Zoom hearing is scheduled for this Wednesday afternoon to go over witnesses and questions allowed during the trial. Judge Kathy Bradshaw-Elliott says she wants to make sure there is no redundancy in the trial and that everyone knows what the witnesses will testify to.

The trial for Harris starts Monday, February 23. Darius Sullivan was convicted of murder last year and sentenced to life in prison.
