Inert ordnance found in Cedar Lake

Aug 31, 2022 | 10:20 AM

The Cedar Lake Police Department reports they were called to a home in the 10-thousand-block of 129th Avenue Tuesday  by a homeowner who told them he believed he’d possibly found a mortar shell. The homeowner told officers he’d been working in a shed on his property when he found the item partially buried in the ground. The Porter County Bomb Squad was sent to the home and determined it was a World War II British Smoke Grenade that had been rendered inert. A search of the area reportedly turned up a World War II rifle grenade that had also been rendered non-functional. Cedar Lake Police say the Bomb Squad safely removed the ordinance.
