Governor JB Prizker last week signed legislation that creates a per-qualification process to build a third Chicago area airport at Peotone. The long talked about airport would primarily serve cargo aircraft following the expansion in the south suburbs of warehousing operations over the past decade for companies like Amazon. It’s hoped the process will draw partners for the construction phase of the project. Supporters of the airport say the construction of the airport would create an estimated 10,000 jobs with a possible 15,000 jobs available once the airport is operational. Those against it argue Chicago already has enough cargo capacity at its airports. The state owns 5,000 acres of land being held for an airport that cost taxpayers 100 million dollars.
