Resentencing Hearing Scheduled for Convicted Killer

Nov 7, 2023 | 10:09 AM
A man doing life for the 1990 murder of a Bradley woman when he was 14 has been granted a resentencing hearing.  The now 48 year old John Colasurdo stabbed 80 year old Helen Correll multiple times inside her home. He was arrested in 2003 and subsequently convicted and sentenced to life after police got a tip on what had become a cold case.  However in 2012 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to sentence a 14 year old to mandatory life without parole. The Daily Journal reports the 3rd District Illinois Appellate Court did uphold Colasurdo’s guilty verdict, but sent the case back for resentencing as per the Supreme Court ruling. The next hearing is set for January 2024.
