Curtis says he’ll ask for one percent sales tax
As you may have heard, the Illinois Legislature voted earlier this year to eliminated the one-percent sales tax on groceries. A tax that the State collected, but went directly to local municipalities. In a recent podcast, Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis said it was a good move for the State, not so much for local governments
Curtis said the law doesn’t take effect until July of 2026, but his intention will be to ask the City Council to keep the sales tax in place
Curtis adds the one-percent grocery sales tax is paid by everyone buying groceries in the City of Kankakee, not just Kankakee residents. You can hear more of that conversation under The Valley Community Conversations tab on our website or on most podcast platforms.
