Wilmington Police warn of ruse scams

Apr 16, 2025 | 9:02 AM
The Will County Sheriff’s Office reports a recent uptick in “ruse” burglaries. In a Facebook post, officials say the crime typically involves at least two people who try to enter a home under false pretenses, like pretending to be a utility worker or official. One will usually try to talk to the homeowner at the front door while the other tries to enter through another unlocked door or window. Officials say the most recent incidents happened in the Plum Valley and Willow Brook Estates subdivisions in Crete Township. The two suspects were reportedly observed using walkie-talkies to communicate and drove a black Chevy SUV with black rims. Deputies suggest avoiding opening the door for strangers and ask that you report suspicious activity immediately.
