Bourbonnais looks to replace sales tax on groceries

Jun 3, 2025 | 11:14 AM
The Village of Bourbonnais took the first step last night toward replacing the one-percent sales tax on groceries. Village Finance Director Tara Latz says when the State voted to do away with the tax, they left a large hole in the Village budget

The State-wide one-percent tax on groceries had been in place since 1990. It was collected by the state, then funneled back to local governments where it was collected. The State Legislature voted last year to do away with the tax, but allow local municipalities to continue it if they like. Several communities have voted to continue that tax. If passed at the Village Board’s next meeting, the tax would go into effect in January of next year, just as the State-wide tax ends.
