Crash at Route 50 and 12000 North Road
Illinois State Police report another crash at Route 50 and 12-thousand North Road in far northern Kankakee County. Troopers say the crash happened about 5:30 Monday evening when the 2019 Honda Fit driven by 37-year-old Marissa Gillum was traveling westbound on 12-thousand north road, allegedly failed to stop at Route 50 and hit a southbound pick-up truck. Reports say Gillum was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. The northbound lanes of Route 50 had to be shut down for a time for crash investigation and clean-up.
Arrest made in Kankakee Home Burglary
Kankakee City Police report an arrest in connection to a burglary to a home over the weekend. According to reports, officers were called to the home in the 200 block of South Warren Saturday by the property owner who told them that sometime over the last couple of weeks, someone had forced open an electrical box on the property and had stolen all the copper wiring. Later that day, officers were flagged down by a man who said he had video of the burglary. On Monday, City Police were called to a recycling facility on West South Tec Drive where a man was reportedly trying to sell some copper wire. Police say that man, identified as 36-year-old Michael P Attwood, matched the description they had of the man who allegedly stole the copper wire from the house on South Warren. While taking Atwood into custody, police say they found needle-nosed pliers, a flashlight, crowbar and black gloves on his body or in his back pack. City Police arrested Atwood for residential burglary and possession of burglary tools.
Watseka City Council Discusses Demolishing of Old Opera House
Watseka City Council continues to discuss the demolition of the old Opera House on the corner of Third and Walnut streets. According to the Iroquois County Times republic, the matter was brought up at Tuesday night’s meeting. Mary Jones, the owner of Traditions bar next door, says the poor condition of the Opera House has started to cause damage to her building. A bid from June of this year said it would cost over five hundred thousand dollars to demolish the building. Watseka City Council agreed to work on finding new bids for the demo.
Burn Ban Lifted in Iroquois County
That burn ban issued last week for Iroquois County has been lifted. The Eastern Illinois Fire Chief’s Association and Iroquois County Board made the announcement through a press release this morning. The press release says the decision was made to lift the ban, even though parts of Iroquois County have still not received much rain. Iroquois County residents are still urged to use caution when burning and have an extinguishing method on hand if they do choose to burn.
Bourbonnais Township Park District Scarecrow Winners
The winners have been announced for the Bourbonnais Township Park District’s Scarecrow Contest at Perry Farm in Bradley. First place in business went to VITAS Healthcare. First in Non-Profit was Bourbonnais Elementary School District 53. Number one in the individual/family category went to the Luchessi Family and first place for People’s Choice was ATI Physical Therapy. The scarecrows are on display for people to see at Perry Farm through Halloween.
New Crosswind Runway at Morris Airport
Governor Pritzker is celebrating the start of construction of a new crosswind runway at the Morris Municipal Airport.
The 14-point-seven-million-dollar project is designed to improve capacity and safety while creating jobs. The project consists of building a 35-hundred-foot runway with other airfield improvements, including new taxiways and lighting. The state is committing nearly 12-million-dollars toward the new runway, which has been in the planning stages for at least 15 years.
Pritzker Signs Executive Order for Budget
Governor Pritzker is taking action to help mitigate what he calls President Trump’s disastrous economic policies on Illinois’ budget. Pritzker signed an Executive Order directing state agencies to identify up to four-percent of Fiscal Year 2026 General Funds appropriations to reserve.
The order also requires agencies to conduct immediate budget reviews to identify efficiencies and reductions. The governor’s office says this action comes as all states are forced to manage the Trump and Congressional Republicans’ budget bill that threatens state revenue streams and places pressure on Illinois’ fiscal stability.
Services Announced for Momence Junior High Student
Services for the Momence Junior High School student who passed away unexpectedly Friday have been announced. Visitation for 13 year old Jacob Wesley Schoenbeck will be 2 to 7 Friday at Jensen Funeral Home in Momence. A funeral will be held at Zion UCC Church in Dyer, Indiana on Saturday. According to his obituary, Schoenbeck died at his home on Friday.
New Student Center at JJC Now Open
Joliet Junior College’s New Center for Student Wellness and Support is now open. Governor Pritzker joined school leaders and students yesterday to celebrate the grand opening of the new center with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The facility is designed to promote the holistic well-being of students through accessible and culturally responsive mental health services. Students enrolled in the current semester now have immediate access to a number of wellness services, including counseling with licensed therapists and interns and care coordination and case management to connect students with community resources.
Secret Food Pantry Thursday in Bourbonnais
The Secret Food Pantry will host its next mobile drive-through pantry in the Village of Bourbonnais from 11:00 to noon tomorrow on Briarwood Lane. Anyone in need can come for food. There are no residential or financial restrictions. Pantry organizers ask for a recommended five dollar donation which enters you into a fifty dollar gift card raffle.
