Kankakee Fire Department Called to Apartment for Mattress Fire

Kankakee Fire Department was called out to fight a blaze Saturday morning on the city’s north side. Fire Chief Bryan LaRoche said crews arrived around 9:15 Saturday morning to a home in the 300 block of North Harrison Avenue for the fire. When they arrived, a small fire was found in a second floor apartment. The fire apparently started on a mattress. A young kid said he was sleeping on the bed when he woke up to his leg getting hot and noticed the fire on the mattress. The flames were quickly put put by crews and damage is estimated around five-thousand dollars. Fire fighters were on the scene for about thirty minutes. Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
