Severe weather could hit central and northern Illinois today. The National Weather Service says thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon north of I-74, pushing southeast across the region. Hail larger than golf balls will be possible with the strongest storms, and a few strong tornadoes are also possible. During the evening, the severe weather threat will trend toward damaging winds with gusts over 70 miles per hour possible.
