A Kankakee man has been sentenced to 6 years in federal prison after being convicted of possessing a firearm as a felon. 37-year-old Jerome Simms was sentenced last Friday after pleading guilty to his fifth weapons felony. Previously, Simms had been found guilty twice of armed robbery, once with possessing a weapon in a penal institution and once for possession of a firearm by a felon. During Friday’s sentencing hearing, the feds noted Simms also had several convictions for being in possession of a controlled substance. Once he finishes his six-year sentence, Simms will have to serve three years of supervised release.
