New Laws Change Local Voting Options

Jul 21, 2021 | 9:17 AM
During this morning’s meeting of the Kankakee County Board’s Community Services Committee, County Clerk Dan Hendrickson gave the committee an update on how Public Act 102-0015 will impact local elections. Hendrickson said part the legislation deals with voting security, so the state will be doing a bi-annual audit of computer security in all County Clerk offices. There’ll also be a change to the County Clerk’s website

Dates have also been changed for the primary, next year’s general election has been declared a state holiday and the number of signatures needed to get on the ballot have been reduced by a third. Hendrickson told the committee the biggest change is probably the addition of a permanent vote by mail option

Hendrickson said the changes effect filing periods and dates to request mail-in ballots as well. He says you’ll be able to get all those dates on the County Clerk’s website. The 446-page public act was passed by the General Assembly during the spring legislative session and signed into law by the Governor in June.
