The National Fire Protection Agency says between 2015 and 2019 US Fire Departments responded to more than 160 holiday related fires that resulted in two deaths, 12 injuries and more than 10-million-dollars in property damage. In an effort to keep everyone safe this holiday season, we’ve teamed up with local fire departments to provide you with tips to help make sure your holiday is a safe one. In the first of our series, we’re talking with Manteno Fire Chief Scott O’Brien who says holiday cooking is a leading cause of home fires and injuries this time of year. O’Brien says while Thanksgiving is the peak time for cooking fires and injuries in the home it’s followed closely by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve
O’Brien adds children under five are more likely to be hurt by touching hot pots and pans or scalded by hot liquid than by actual fire
O’Brien adds if you’re deep frying a bird for Christmas make sure you do that outside away from wood decks and garages. Make sure that turkey is thawed before dipping it in the hot oil keep an eye on the cooking temperature.
