Winter storm moves out of area

Feb 18, 2022 | 7:38 AM

As the latest winter storm moved out of the area, things are starting to return to normal. Most of the in-town streets have been plowed, but there are still some slick spots. Blowing and drifting was an issue overnight in the outlying area of the county and was a special issue in Northwest Indiana. Many of the local school districts have called off with another e-learning day planned for today. State Police report report scattered slick spots on roadways around Kankakee County due to blowing and drifting snow. Travel on Interstate highways in Illinois was treacherous yesterday with southbound I-57 shut down overnight for a time near mile marker 309 because of a jack-knifed semi across both lanes of traffic. Over in northwest Indiana, I-65 west of Rensselaer had to be closed for a time Thursday because of a multi-car pileup on the interstate. I-39 near Peoria had to be shut down as well with more than 100 cars involved in a pile-up there yesterday afternoon.  Snow totals around the area ran on the order of four to six inches with seven to nine inch totals in Northwest Indiana.
