The office of the Kankakee County Recorder of Deeds is starting the process to purge county records of unlawful, restrictive covenants in county records. County Recorder Lori Gadbois explainsd at a recent County Board Community Services Committee meeting
Gadbois said folks buying property in the county are sometimes shocked to find what restrictions may have been put on owning property in certain areas when the covenants were put in place
Gadbois added that while the restrictions are not enforceable, going through the process to change covenants helps clean up the books. She added the law includes a process to go through to change the original covenant, which includes petitioning and a fee. Gadbois told the committee she’d ask the Count Board to not affix a fee to this process.
