Jul 15, 2021 | 1:06 PM

The state’s top ethics investigator is resigning. Legislative Inspector General Carol Pope raised concerns in her resignation letter about the limited powers of her office. State Representative Tom Bennett whose 106th District includes the southern portion of our listening area says Pope’s resignation is another signal the legislature isn’t serious about ethics reform:

Pope, a former judge and Menard County state’s attorney, has leveled criticism against that ethics overhaul measure passed by lawmakers this spring. An ongoing federal corruption investigation has led to charges against a number of Illinois lawmakers. Bennett added he hopes Pope’s resignation will force State Government to pass “real” ethics reform.
