Low Census Could Cost City of Kankakee

Aug 17, 2021 | 8:38 AM
At last night’s Kankakee City Council meeting, we asked Mayor Chris Curtis about the census numbers showing that his community had lost enough population for it to lose its home rule authority.  Examples of home rule include the 2 cent sales tax increase that was enacted by a council vote as well as the annual Kankakee Vehicle sticker fee.  Curtis says losing home rule isn’t the big issue.

Curtis notes that Bourbonnais is building new homes and Bradley is on the verge of expanding a housing development.  He also says the housing market, particularly rentals, is very tight, indicating a growing population, not a shrinking one.
