Officials with River Valley Metro say the new downtown Kankakee transfer station is on target for a spring opening, that’ if all goes according to schedule. Agency officials tell the Daily Journal material shortages and weather could still slow down construction. Funding is not a problem because of the Federal Cares Act what was to be a two phased project was combined into one. The new transfer station between the 300 blocks of North Schuyler and North Dearborn will have overhangs to protect riders from the elements and heated walkways in some areas to help keep snow and ice to a minimum.
