A police chase that started with an armed robbery in Pontiac Wednesday ended with a car crash in Kankakee. In a press release, Pontiac Police say they were called to a gas station in Pontiac just before one yesterday afternoon for an armed robbery. The gas station employee said a man wearing a mask had entered the store, displayed a handgun and demanded money from the register. The robber then allegedly made the employee lay on the floor while emptying the till and took off. Pontiac Police say it turns out the car used in the robbery had been reported stolen in Aurora, and was spotted traveling at a high rate of speed about 6:30 last night in Grundy County. Deputies reportedly chased the car through Dwight and parts of both Livingston and Kankakee Counties. Kankakee City Police say officers spotted the car traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of West Station and Court before the car left the roadway, striking a sign and several houses before coming to rest in the west alley of South Tanner. The driver of the car, identified as 27-year-old Jarvis L. Postlewaite of Aurora reportedly took off on foot and refused police orders before he was taken into custody. While taking him into custody, police reports say Postlewaite grabbed for his chest on several occasions and a handgun was found on the ground under his body when he was finally arrested. A search of the car allegedly turned up a stolen handgun, a large amount of cash and various narcotics. Postlewaite was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
