Sheriff Downey warns of Safe-T Act provision

Apr 13, 2022 | 11:08 AM
During this morning’s meeting of the Kankakee County Board’s Criminal Justice Committee, County Sheriff Mike Downey was asked about a recent article in the Daily Journal about the so-called Safe-T act passed by the General Assembly last year. Downey said there are a lot of moving parts to the bill and the effects of the bill won’t be fully known until they go into effect. As an example Downey talked about the bill’s provision for cashless bail

Downey pointed out that without bail and with the forgiveness of fees provided for in the Safe-T Act, the total cost of law enforcement will fall on taxpayers with none of the cost being carried by those that break the law.
