The Indiana State Police report they’re investigating an officer involved shooting in Newton County Indiana. According to reports, it all started about 10:30 yesterday morning when Newton County Deputies were returning from Iroquois County with 36-year-old Jayme Lopez of Gary Indiana after he’d been arrested there on an outstanding warrant. As they got to the Newton County Jail, reports say Lopez escaped the transport vehicle and officers began to search for him. Just after one Wednesday afternoon, Lopez reportedly forced his way into an apartment in Kentland at gunpoint. When officers arrived, they began negotiations with Lopez and were reportedly met with gunfire. A Jasper County officer returned fire, striking Lopez who then gave up. Lopez was flown by lifeline helicopter to South Bend Indiana for treatment. Indiana State Police area investigating the shooting at the request of both the Newton and Jasper County Sheriff’s.
