In Kankakee County Court last week, a woman charged in the murder of her 14 month old son in 2018 lost her effort to have a statement made to investigators suppressed when she goes to trial. Lawyers for 26 year old Keyonna M. Deckert argued her civil rights were violated when she was questioned by investigators without first being read her Miranda Rights. Prosecutors countered by pointing out Deckert was only a witness at that point and did not become a suspect until an autopsy showed the boy died from blunt force trauma. The boy was found unresponsive at an area hotel where the Colorado woman and her boyfriend had been staying. The Daily Journal reports that the Couple first told investigators that the boy became unresponsive after having an allergic reaction to wheat cereal, but she later allegedly admitted to throwing the boy to the floor where her boyfriend, 34 year old Dean Williams then punched the boy in the face and head all because he would stop crying. Both have been charged with first degree murder.
