Gas prices hit record high heading into Memorial Day weekend

May 26, 2022 | 11:41 AM

Gas prices have hit a new highest-ever milestone nationally.  According to Triple-A, the national average price for regular is now four dollars and 60 cents a gallon, after sitting at four-59 for most of the past week.  The price has shot up almost half-a-dollar a gallon since last month.  Regular averaged four-13 gallon one month ago.

While prices have jumped on the national level, Triple-A says the cost for a gallon of regular no-lead gas in Illinois is actually down today from yesterday. Triple-A says the state-wide average cost for a gallon of gas is four-dollars-96-cents, down almost a penny from yesterday. In Kankakee County you’ll find the average is 4.82, down almost three cents from yesterday, but still a buck-65 more than you paid at the pump last Memorial Day weekend.
