A 17 year old from Rantoul, accused of shooting a woman in the head, has been released on his own recognizance after Ford County prosecutors told the court that they were still not ready to go to trial. Daniel E. Hoffman allegedly fired a shot in the 600 block of North American Street in Paxton in February that struck a 19 year old woman in the head as she rode in a passing vehicle. Hoffman’s attorney has been pushing for a speedy trial in the case that has seen several delays on the state side. In Illinois, a defendant has a right to trial within 120 days. Hoffman has already been held for 144 days so the judge let him go to avoid any speedy trial issues. The woman has since recovered.
