Kankakee area police scanners are apparently about to go silent. According to a press release from the Kankakee County Communications Center or KanCom, over the next several months the county will be moving to an encrypted radio system. Rendering scanners useless for certain radio traffic. The county sites officer safety as one of many reasons for the change. Another is to keep the police calls off the internet and social media until officials are ready to release the information. The press release does not say how much the new system is costing Kankakee County taxpayers.
