9 Years for Amtrak Sexuall Assault and Gilman Manhunt

More than two years after he caused a massive manhunt in the Gilman area,  36-year-old Joel Smith has been sentenced to nine years in prison. Smith pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a girl on an Amtrak train in September 2022, just days after his release from federal prison. The assault sparked a 36-hour search involving K9s, drones, and even farm vehicles as law enforcement scoured cornfields near the Gilman train station. Smith was finally caught at a nearby intersection.
