Legislature advances bill to regulate home schooling

Mar 20, 2025 | 8:39 AM
Illinois lawmakers are moving forward with a controversial bill that would place regulations on homeschooling in the state.  Hundreds of opponents to the measure rallied at the State Capitol building yesterday as the bill was approved by the House Education Policy Committee.  Under the legislation, families would be required to inform their school districts when they decide to homeschool their children, and the parents or guardians would need to have a high school diploma or equivalent.  The bill follows an investigation by ProPublica and Capitol News Illinois last year that showed the state isn’t doing enough to make sure homeschooled students are shielded from potential harm and are receiving a proper education
