Former Illinois Governor George Ryan has passed away at age 91. Even though Ryan was born in Iowa, he spent most of his life as a resident of Kankakee. Ryan began his political career in Kankakee County when he started serving on the county board in 1968. Ryan entered into state politics when he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1972. From there, he also served as the Lieutenant Governor from 1983 to 1991 and Secretary of State from 1991 to 1999. Ryan was elected Illinois’s 39th Governor in 1999 and served until 2003.
