Sand removed from Kankakee River

May 8, 2025 | 2:30 PM

Over 7,000 cubic yards of sand has been taken out of the Kankakee River in just the past three weeks. In a Facebook post, the Kankakee County board says significant headway has been made near the Aroma Park boat launch as work on the sediment removal project continues.  Work is now complete on approximately 200 yards to the west of the launch, with approximately 650 yards remaining to the west and over 500 yards to the east still in progress. Officials say they’re already seeing improvements to the river’s water flow and they expect to see further enhancements to the overall condition of the Kankakee River as the dredging project continues.
