Recent rains have helped lessen drought concerns across the area. The latest map released Thursday by the US Drought monitor describes 94 percent of Kankakee County and 21 percent of Iroquois County as abnormally dry. An improvement from last week where the majority of both counties were considered to be in “moderate drought”. While conditions have improved in Kankakee and Iroquois, Will County continues to mostly be in moderate drought. The map puts 96 percent of Will County in the moderate drought category with just four percent listed as abnormally dry.
Across the state line, 79 percent of Newton County and 54 percent of Jasper County are considered just abnormally dry, while the remainder of those counties and the entirety of Benton County continue to be considered to be in moderate drought. The latest map contains information gathered by the US Drought Monitor through Tuesday of this week.
