Ribbon Cutting for KCHA West Harbor Residences
 
A ribbon cutting was held this morning for the Kankakee County Housing Authority’s West Harbor Residences along Fifth Avenue in Kankakee. Executive Director Joseph Anderson said the completion of the 14 million dollar project shows the community the opportunities the housing authority brings to the area.
A street within West Harbor was also named West Pace Boulevard in honor of Kankakee County NAACP Branch President Theodis Pace during this morning’s ceremony.

 

West Harbor Street Named After Theodis Pace
 
A ribbon cutting was held this morning for the Kankakee County Housing Authority’s West Harbor Residences along Fifth Avenue in Kankakee. Part of the ceremony was dedicating one of the streets, West Pace Boulevard, after well known community member, Theodis Pace. Pace said it’s a great honor.  
Pace is best known for his work with the Kankakee Eastside Bulldogs Football League and the Kankakee County Branch of the NAACP. Fourteen million dollars was invested into the KCHA West Harbor Residences offering 36 new affordable single family and duplex homes.

 

Kankakee Carjacking Ends in Crash
 
A car allegedly stolen Tuesday afternoon on West Court Street in Kankakee ended with a crash in Bradley. According to city police reports, officers were called to a gas station in the 100 block of West Court Street just before two in the afternoon Tuesday for a report of a stolen car. When police arrived, an employee of the gas station informed officers his 2007 white Toyota Corolla that was parked on the south side of the business was allegedly stolen. The employee said he left his keys inside his car. When he noticed his car was missing from the parking lot, he saw the car traveling northbound on South West Avenue. He ran up to the car and tried to grab the alleged suspect, later identified as 44 year old Sammy G. Kanatzar, out of the car. The man was unsuccessful and Kanatzar sped away in the car. Kanatzar then headed north into Bradley where he got in an accident with two other cars at the intersection of North Fulton Avenue and East Broadway Street. Kanatzar was detained and transported to a local hospital to treat his injuries. Kanatzar has been charged with one count of vehicular carjacking, one count possession of a stolen motor vehicle, one count of battery, among other charges.

 

Heat and Health
With temperatures in the 90’s and a heat index over 100 for the next few days, it’s important to take the necessary precautions to avoid illnesses such as heat exhaustion.
Chapman added you should avoid sun exposure for long periods of time when extreme heat watches and warnings are in place. If you do need to be out in the sun, Chapman says you should wear a hat, along with sun screen, and drink plenty of water.

 

Jasper County Fair continues
The Jasper County fair is running all this week in Rensselaer Indiana. With a look at today’s events. here’s Suzanne Frey, publicity director for the fair.

The fair runs through Saturday at the fairgrounds in Rensselaer.

 

Changes at MSMF
If you’re going to Merchant Street Music Fest in Downtown Kankakee this weekend, there’s a couple of new things you should know about ahead of time. Kankakee Public Library Director Allison Beasley.

Cooling centers open
With the extreme heat and humidity we expect over the next couple of days, cooling center will be open across the region. Most libraries and municipal centers can be used if you need somewhere to get out of the heat. When the heat index is over 100, River Valley Metro buses can be used as mobile cooling centers, or as a way to get to someplace with air conditioning, like the mall. You might check your particular municipality’s website for more local cooling centers.
