Gas Smell Forces Herscher School Evacuation

Students and staff at Herscher schools are safe after a gas leak was thought to have occurred on campus yesterday afternoon. Herscher Community Unit School District 2 Superintendent Doctor Rich Decman tells us the smell of natural gas was detected on the high school and intermediate school campuses around noon Thursday. First responders were called and Students and staff were evacuated out of an abundance of caution. After an investigation was completed, it was determined there was no leak but rather the odorant that is commonly added to natural gas to help detect its presence. Dr. Decman says students and staff resumed regular school activities after being outside for about fifteen to twenty minutes.
