Drought concerns are growing across the area. The latest report released Thursday by the US Drought Monitor says almost 10 percent of Kankakee County is in “moderate drought” another 65 percent of the county is “abnormally dry” with 25 percent of the county without any drought concerns at all. The story is quite different in Iroquois County where nearly 30 percent of the county is classified as being in extreme drought, 42 percent in severe drought with the rest of the county in moderate drought. Nearly 80 percent of Ford County is experiencing extreme drought conditions with the other 20 percent in either severe or moderate drought.
Across the state line, the US Drought Monitor lists all of Benton County as being in severe drought. 10 percent of Newton County is in severe drought., with nearly 60 percent in moderate drought about 10 percent abnormally dry and 10 percent without any drought concerns at all. About eight percent of Jasper County is listed as in severe drought. Around 40 percent in moderate drought, 30 percent abnormally dry and 20 percent without any drought concerns at all. Today’s numbers include data gathered by the US Drought Monitor through Tuesday of this week.
