The City of Kankakee is set to gain ownership of the rundown building at the corner of East Court Street and North Chicago Avenue that was once the Salvation Army Thrift Store. A resolution was passed at Monday night’s city council meeting to buy the property from the tax sale for around eight-hundred dollars. Mayor Chris Curtis says the biggest concern is public safety.

Mayor Curtis said if they can’t find someone who wants to fix up the building by late Spring, early Summer, they will have to demolish it.
