NWS says five tornadoes hit northern Illinois Tuesday

The National Weather Service has confirmed five tornadoes hit northern Illinois earlier this week. The Weather service says that includes one EF-0 tornado, three EF-1 tornadoes and one EF-2. One of the EF-1 tornadoes hit Wilmington with peak winds of about 90 miles a hour, while the EF-2 ran in a line from Monee to St. John and had peak winds of about 115 miles an hour. The Weather service says in addition to the tornadoes, there was widespread straight-line wind damage occurred throughout southern Cook, eastern Will counties in Illinois as well as much of Lake, Porter, and northern Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana. Indications are that peak winds were likely near 100 mph across parts of southern Cook, eastern Will, and into Lake and Porter counties. The Weather Service says they’ll continue damage assessments over the next several days.
