New Mental Health Pilot Program at County Jail

Apr 15, 2024 | 5:40 AM

A pilot program has been started at the Jerome Combs Detention Center in Kankakee to help treat those suffering from mental health difficulties.  Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey told the County’s Criminal Justice Committee this week that the jail will be accepting up to 12 individuals at a time that are currently being held in other county jails that do not have the necessary facilities to treat the problem.  Downey says it’s a plus for Kankakee County.

Downey stressed the program is only temporary until the Illinois Department of Human Services can find alternative treatment and housing for those individuals.
