The proposed Fortitude Community Outreach Homeless Shelter planned for the 1200 block of South Fourth Ave in Kankakee ran into a roadblock Tuesday when the city’s planning Board, on a 6 to 2 vote, denied the groups request for a zoning change in the residential neighborhood to commercial. Board member Deb Terrill who made the motion to deny first said the board’s actions should not be seen as a judgement on Fortitude, but rather just what the board can do by statute.
Fortitude has to now hope the full city council rejects the vote. No word yet on when the city council might take up the matter.
